  • Full time fixed term position until August 2027, located on the Camperdown Campus at the School of Physics Contribute to the design, development, and deployment of next-generation solar power platforms for space applications Base Salary (HEO8) $$126,065 - $142,171 p.a + 17% superannuation About the opportunity The Solar Research Group within the School of Physics is currently seeking a driven and experienced System Integration Engineer to join their team in shaping the next generation of solar power platforms for space applications - starting from concept and design through to launch and in-orbit validation. You will play a pivotal role in designing, building, and testing high-performance solar arrays integrated with advanced power electronics, and in demonstrating their capabilities through real-world satellite missions. In partnership with a leading industry innovator, we are developing a new generation of multijunction space solar cells that offer higher power-to-weight ratios, improved radiation tolerance, and significantly reduced costs. This is a rare opportunity that combines technical leadership, hands-on development, and end-to-end project delivery in a fast-paced, high-impact environment. While a background in electronics or electrical engineering is preferred, we encourage applicants from other relevant disciplines who have a track record of innovation and impact in space technology. You’ll be working alongside a highly motivated and agile research team known for world-leading solar research, a strong culture of innovation, and a collaborative, community-oriented ethos. Our state-of-the-art laboratories are housed in purpose-built science and technology facilities, located in the heart of the University of Sydney’s main campus. Your key responsibilities will be to: lead end-to-end project planning, technical coordination, and milestone delivery for space solar power systems co-develop and manage solar cell array products with end users, ensuring commercial viability and scalable manufacturing design and prototype electronic subsystems, including power conditioning and system monitoring, tailored for next-generation solar architectures oversee the fabrication, assembly, and qualification of electronics and solar modules, ensuring compliance with mechanical and electrical specifications execute system integration and environmental testing, validating performance for launch-readiness and operation collaborate with research teams, manufacturing engineers, and launch operators to align product development with mission and commercial goals coordinate and manage risk assessment activities within the work area, prioritising workplace health and safety and ensuring consistent alignment with university guidelines and best practices. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a System Integration Engineer who can demonstrate the following skills and experience: tertiary qualifications in electrical or electronics engineering with preferably 5+ years of experience, ideally in power systems, aerospace or solar energy technologies although we welcome applicants from other disciplines with relevant experience deep knowledge of the hardware integration lifecycle and engineering product development processes proven success in leading or managing small agile teams to deliver complex system outcomes familiarity with solar PV systems, power conditioning, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), or radiation-tolerant electronics is a plus excited about being part of a development team from the ground up and demonstrated experience of generating and executing novel and new ideas for problem solving.
