- UGL Defence has recently commenced an Asset Management, Operations and Maintenance contract for the Defence Fuels network. We are recruiting a Process Safety Engineer, to join our business in what is an exciting and unique opportunity to work in the Australia Defence environment to support the national security requirements of the Nation.
- The Opportunity
- The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for identifying, assessing and managing major accident hazards (MAHs) across the Defence Fuels Supply Chain. The role ensures process safety risks are systematically controlled through effective engineering, operations, procedural and assurance systems.
- We are flexible for this position to be based in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne or Perth.
- Key responsibilities
- Lead the development, and rollout, of a structured Process Safety Management (PSMS)
- Develop training packages and lessons learned to improvement awareness of Process Safety across the contract
- Deliver process safety inductions, training, and lessons learned workshops for operators, engineers, contractors and senior leaders.
- Lead and facilitate HAZOP, HAZID, Bowtie, LOPA and other process safety risk assessments.
- Provide SME support to the Engineering team in reviewing designing, testing and maintaining critical process safety systems
- Support the asset integrity team in managing Loss of Containment (LoC) risks.
- Provide SME advice on Hazardous Area Dossiers, Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), Pipeline Safety Management Systems (PSMS)
- Support the investigation team for LoC events and other process safety incidents using root cause analysis.
- Support facility compliance with WHS Regulations, DG Codes, COMCARE or EPA license requirements.
- Support the preparation for regulatory inspections, audits and assurance reviews.
- Ideal attributes

- Bachelor Degree in Chemical, Process, Mechanical or Control System Engineering.
- Desirable: Postgraduate qualifications in Safety Engineering or Risk Management.
- Preferred: Functional Safety (IEC 61511) or Certified Functional Safety Expert (CFSE/CFSP).
- 3-10 years of engineering experience in fuel, petrochemical, oil & gas, chemicals or hazardous industries.
- Practical experience facilitating HAZOPs, LOPAs, Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRAs), and developing process safety studies.
- Exposure to bulk liquid storage, DG transport systems, SCADA/PLC-based control systems and fuel facility operations.
