About

Mechanical Engineer - Oil & Gas (Downhole Monitoring & Surface Packages)

OnSpec DAQ Pty Ltd is an Australian company championing the supply of Data Acquisition Systems across Australia. Our mission is to sustain a working culture that delivers intelligent, commercial and innovative solutions for our clients.

The Role

With the expansion of our business, OnSpec is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to plan, engineer and oversee the build, installation and lifecycle support of downhole monitoring equipment and surface data-acquisition skids/packages for oil & gas projects.

Key responsibilities include:

* Develop mechanical solutions from concept to detailed design, producing calculations, 3D models and fabrication/installation documentation for monitoring skids and assemblies.
* Specify materials, components, piping and mechanical services; define duty, capacity and pressure/temperature envelopes, and set plant/skid layout to meet performance and safety targets.
* Lead assembly and commissioning of mechanical/process packages (FAT/SAT), setting acceptance criteria and verifying performance through testing and data.
* Create and maintain engineering procedures for installation, modification, QA/QC, testing, inspection and preventive maintenance aligned with WHS and relevant Australian Standards.
* Analyse workshop/field utilization, layouts, throughput and cost data to improve worker/equipment efficiency and line balancing.
* Build work-measurement baselines (time-and-motion/work sampling) to underpin capacity planning, maintenance strategies and productivity targets.
* Coordinate project resources—trades, contractors, suppliers, materials, plant and equipment—to deliver to schedule, budget and quality.
* Carry out site and workshop inspections to confirm performance is sustained; raise NCRs and implement corrective actions.
* Drive continuous improvement and root-cause investigations (RCA/5-Whys/FMEA) and implement engineered solutions.
* Maintain technical records—drawings, BOMs, specifications, test reports—with configuration/version control.
* Collaborate with operations, electrical/instrumentation, HSE and procurement teams, and interface with vendors and clients during design, build and commissioning.
* Prepare technical reports, calculations and scopes for new designs, surveys and maintenance programs.

Location, roster & salary

* This is a full-time role based out of Toowoomba (QLD), following a standard 5x2 roster (Monday–Friday). Some workshop activities and field travel across the Surat and other basins may be required.
* Salary range: AUD $80,000 – $85,000 + superannuation, commensurate with experience.

The ideal candidate will be:

* Experienced: Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in oil & gas, heavy industry or rotating/process equipment environments, with proven ability in mechanical design, commissioning and maintenance of plant or packaged systems.
* Proficient in CAD: Advanced skills with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks/Inventor preferred), including assemblies, drawings and simulation capabilities, plus ability to interpret P&IDs, isometrics and fabrication drawings.
* Practically minded, strong problem-solver, with a focus on safety and quality.
* A team player who communicates clearly with field crews, clients and suppliers.

The successful candidate will have:

* Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (or equivalent).
* Demonstrated experience in mechanical design/commissioning/maintenance of plant or packages.
* Knowledge of relevant Australian Standards and WHS practices; ability to develop SWMS/JSA.
* Current driver’s license (essential).
* MR or higher truck license (desirable).
