The Client

VGR Group Pty Ltd in Smithfield NSW is seeking an experienced Formwork Carpenter who can work independently to a high standard to join our growing team and support ongoing commercial and residential construction projects. This role is suited to a skilled tradesperson who takes pride in delivering high-quality workmanship and can confidently carry out timber, steel, and plywood formwork.

The Role

The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of finishing carpentry and be able to execute precise work to meet high-quality standards.

This role is full time with an annual salary set at $104,000 plus superannuation. The role is based in Smithfield NSW.

Responsibilities

Build, install, modify, and repair structural components and fixtures using timber, plywood, lightweight steel framing, wallboard, and related construction materials.

Read and interpret architectural and structural drawings, set-outs, dimensions, and levels.

Set out and erect timber and plywood formwork for suspended slabs, beams, columns, walls, and step-downs.

Measure, calculate, and prepare required quantities of timber, plywood, and formwork materials.

Construct and install tilt-up panel moulds to specification.

Cut, assemble, fix, brace, and secure formwork using standard carpentry tools and power equipment.

Form retaining walls using conventional timber formwork and Dincel Ready-Wall systems.

Install edge boards and boundary formwork accurately to Finished Floor Levels (FFL).

Work independently and supervise carpenters and formworkers

Strip, clean, and prepare formwork for reuse following concrete pours.

Install temporary handrails and maintain safe, compliant work environments at all times.

Ensure all work meets engineering specifications, Australian Standards, and WHS requirements.

Requirements

Relevant trade qualifications in carpentry

Must have 5 years’ in construction carpentry in a professional commercial setting

Must have 5 years’ experience in residential and commercial formwork carpentry projects from early to final stages of construction

At least 5 year’s carpentry experience installing and detailing HCS (Hybrid Cladding Systems), R/S (Roof Sarking), and VCL (Vapour Control Layer) with moisture management and weatherproofing specifications.

At least 5 year’s experience constructing and installing formwork systems for commercial or residential concrete structures including suspended slabs, columns, beams, and retaining walls

At least 5 year’s experience working with timber, plywood, modular formwork systems, and proprietary formwork products in staged construction environments

At least 5 year’s experience supporting concrete pours, formwork curing, stripping procedures, and structural compliance checks

Experience in steel formwork as well as timber

Strong ability to work accurately from drawings, plans, and levels.

Proven skills in measuring, cutting, assembling, and dismantling formwork systems.

Reliable, safety-focused, and able to work independently or as part of a team.

Current Construction White Card essential; additional tickets highly regarded.

Must know how to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings

Must have at least 2 work referees

Physical dexterity and ability to stand for long periods

In-depth knowledge and understanding of all technical drawings and specifications

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Australia residency with working rights preferred
